What is the best way to avoid taking the "Brown Brothers" (roaches) to a new place?

EWWW! I've never had these things in my life. I have been living in an apartment complex. I've been in the same apt. for over 2 yrs now. Never had any..untillllllll someone moves in downstairs brings the Brown Bros. then leaves maybe 8 months later. Now our place has them because we are directly above that apt. HELP! How can I not take them with me to my new apt. I am moving to in a few wks? I had the idea to lace my boxes I pack with boric acid. Do u think this will work? Do u have any other ideas that maybe you have tried? I am terrified of bugs especially THEM...please save me from them.
